PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The next generation of leaders in mathematical and statistical science is being driven by increasingly complex global technology and challenges. The Mines Applied Mathematics and Statistics program is at the forefront of research being used to investigate and find solutions to these important questions. The growing need for mathematicians and statisticians is only expected to increase (up 24 percent from 2011 to 2024) and Mines will both prepare you for a rewarding career in a number of fields and support you post-graduation in your job search.

Requirements and Costs

Master’s Thesis 

  • A bachelor’s degree with a grade-point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale
  • If bachelor’s degree is NOT in mathematics, three letters of recommendation required
  • GRE with quantitative section score of 151 or higher (or 650 on the old scale) is preferred. Applicants who have graduated from Mines within the past five years are not required to submit GRE scores, however, applicants from outside of Mines must submit GRE scores
  • Mines accepts GRE scores from tests taken within five years of the date of entry
  • Statement of purpose letter: present your professional and personal goals
  • Resume/CV
  • For international applicants or applicants whose native language is not English, please review the ENGLISH PROFICIENCY requirement tab

Master’s Non-Thesis

*Due to Covid-19, students applying for master’s non-thesis and certificate programs for spring 2021 and fall 2021 are not required to submit GRE scores.

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY

  • 72 credit hours beyond the bachelor’s degree. At least 24 of these hours must be thesis hours. Doctoral students must pass the comprehensive examination (a qualifying examination and thesis proposal), complete a satisfactory thesis, and successfully defend their thesis

MASTER OF SCIENCE 

  • Non-Thesis: 30 credit hours of coursework
