Requirements and Costs
Master’s Thesis
- Applicants for chemistry degree programs are expected to demonstrate undergraduate-level proficiency in physical, organic, inorganic and analytical chemistry
- Undergraduate deficiencies will be determined by faculty through interviews at the beginning of the student’s first semester of graduate work
- The department has no minimum GPA requirement
- Statement of purpose letter: present your professional and personal goals

Master’s Non-Thesis

Doctorate

- Three letters of recommendation

*Due to Covid-19, students applying for spring 2021 and fall 2021 are not required to submit GRE scores at all degree levels.
MASTER OF SCIENCE – Thesis
- Minimum of 36 semester hours, including at least 24 semester hours of course work, are required. At least 15 of the required 24 semester hours of course work must be taken in the Department of Chemistry
MASTER OF SCIENCE – Non-Thesis
- 30 semester hours of course credit including coursework, independent study on a topic determined by the student and the student’s faculty advisor, and the preparation of an oral presentation of a report based on the student’s independent study topic
DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY
- The program of study for the PhD degree in Applied Chemistry includes coursework, a comprehensive examination, a thesis proposal, research, and the preparation and oral defense of a PhD thesis based on the student’s research
