Mines’ Civil and Environmental Engineering graduate program combines robust research in areas such as environmental and water engineering, geotechnical engineering and structural engineering with world-class faculty and one-of-a-kind industry partnerships to ensure graduates are prepared to be the leaders the world needs.

Requirements and Costs

Master’s Thesis

A bachelor’s degree, preferably in a science or engineering discipline
Applicants who have graduated from Mines within the past five years are not required to submit GRE scores, however, applicants from outside of Mines or that graduated from Mines more than five years ago must submit GRE scores
Mines accepts GRE scores from tests taken within five years of the date of entry
Three letters of recommendation
Statement of purpose letter: present your professional and personal goals
Resume/CV

*Due to Covid-19, students applying for master’s non-thesis and certificate programs for spring 2021 and fall 2021 are not required to submit GRE scores.

MASTER’s Thesis

30 total credit hours, consisting of coursework (24 hrs.), seminar, and research (6 hrs.). Students must also write and orally defend a research thesis

MASTER’s Non-Thesis

30 total credit hours, consisting of coursework (27 hrs.) and either a three-credit-hour research-based Independent Study (CEEN599) or a designated design course (3 hrs.) and seminar

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY

72 total credit hours, consisting coursework (at least 24 hrs.), seminar, and research (at least 24 hrs.). Students must also successfully complete written and oral qualifying examinations, prepare and present a dissertation proposal, and write and defend a doctoral dissertation. Ph.D. students are also expected to submit the dissertation work for publication in scholarly journals
